Smilling Sun below Peace Culture title

An internationally and locally collaborative initiative, Peace Culture was initially conceived and developed by the Wayne State University Center for Peace and Conflict Studies (CPCS) and the Colombian peace education nonprofit Somos CaPAZes in 2018. Initially supported by a national mini-grant from the Campus Compact Fund for Positive Engagement, the pilot project took place that same year at Dickinson East Elementary School in Hamtramck, Michigan in partnership with the Hamtramcky Odyssey Project for Excellence after school program. The project worked to engage with diverse perspectives to cultivate empathy and understanding, establishing relationships across difference, and foster collaboration and civic vitality. Peace Culture's program content development was influenced by the work of Somos CaPAZes’ Multiplicadores de PAZ program, Harvard University’s Peace Games program, the United States Institute of Peace Academy, and Stanford University’s Graduate School of Education Youth Engaged in Leadership and Learning (YELL) Handbook.
